Sometimes powerful emotions like anger, grief, and contempt can get the better of us, but it doesn’t mean that they have to define us. Anger in particular can certainly be a powerful force, but with awareness, patience, and the use of essential oils, anger and other negative emotions can be reined in and controlled.
Today, we will be focusing on the best essential oils for anger and how you can better apply calming techniques to help control this fiery emotion.
Essential Oils for Anger
I have certainly been guilty of a short temper from time to time and I’m sure you or someone you know has felt the same way.
While it’s good to express emotions in order to prevent chronic symptoms like apathy, fatigue, muscle tention and pain in the shoulders, neck, and back, digestive distress, rashes, and other skin issues, it’s still good to know when to step away from “the emotional mind” and step back into “the rational mind”.
Just doing this alone can really help open up your perspective and allow yourself to focus on the heart of the matter. You can then think about the situation more logically and constructively instead of flying off the handle and reacting on the spot.
Not only will controlling how you express anger keep you more level-headed overall, it will also help you prevent more dangerous symptoms in the long run like high blood pressure and stroke.
I know it’s definitely not easy, but that’s why we’re using essential oils to help us deal with anger so that we can lessen or eliminate the toll anger and aggression can have on your own health well-being as well as that of others around you.
How Essential Oils Can Help With Anger
Aromatherapy has been used throughout history to help alter the mood and trigger specific chemical reactions in the brain to help calm the body and mind.
For example:
Essential oils high in monoterpene alcohols like rose, jasmine, chamomile, lavender, and calendula all have a calming, restorative, and sedating effects which allow us to slow down and think more calmly.
Essential oils that come from bark, resin, roots, herbs, and grasses are all grounding and mood stabilizing oils due to their esters, sesquiterpenes, and oxides. These oils include frankincense, myrrh, lemongrass, basil, etc. and are great for keeping us in the rational frame of mind.
Keytone-rich mint essential oils are known to be energizing and uplifting to both mind and spirit when we feel defeated by anger and negativity.
Essential oils that contain high amounts of phenols like clove, cinnamon, and cardamom all have the ability to warm emotions and help us move forward.
Citrus essential oils are high in limonen, monoterpenes, and beta pinene which are known to cleanse negativity and are uplifting and rejuvanating to the senses. You literally cannot feel angry when sniffing a citrus essential oil. I dare you to try it!
So, as you can see, essential oils have the ability to trigger and stimulate an emotional response in a positive and healing way so that we can better manage emotions like anger.
Here are a few of the best essential oils for anger:

Essential Oils for Anger – Calming the Storm, How to Cope, and Releasing Unexpressed Anger
One of the best ways to use essential oils for anger management is to recognize the need for calm and collected thinking. It’s all too easy to let anger take over when you’re in a rage, but in order to start calming strong emotions, we need to calm down enough to the point where we can think clearly and look at the heart of the matter.
The best essential oils to use for calming anger fast include:
Bergamot
Patchouli
Roman Chamomile
Sweet Orange
Vetiver
You can simply sniff the aroma of one of these oils from the bottle itself, or create a roll-on blend.

Coping with Anger Blend
Learning to cope with our anger is another must when learning how to change our reactions to certain situations. It can be all too easy to feel angry at ourselves over something we did or said in the past. This type of anger can also be focused on what others have done or said to us in the past as well that have caused us to hold a grudge against that person.
When facing long lasting anger that won’t seem to budge, using essential oils as part of your healing journey can really help you let go of “old anger”.
These essential oils include:
Bergamot
Black Pepper
Cistus
Roman Chamomile
Spikenard
Valerian
Vetiver
Ylang Ylang

3 drops cistus essential oil
6 drops bergamot essential oil
8 drops vetiver essential oil

Essential Oils for Releasing Unexpressed Anger
All too often we are expected to bite our tongues, hold in our feelings, and swallow our anger. However, instead of keeping it bottled up where it can grow and fester, it’s super important to be able to release unexpressed negative feelings before they consume us.
Some of the best essential oils for releasing unexpressed anger include:
Black Pepper
Cedarwood
Clove
Ginger
Patchouli
These essential oils all have very grounding qualities that allow us to release unwanted and unneeded emotional baggage so that we are no longer slaves to feelings of bitterness, resentment, guilt, betrayal, and anger.
You can simply sniff the aroma of these oils from the bottle or diffuse your favorites for 20 minutes 2-3 times daily.
Along with mindful techniques like yoga, deep breathing exercises, getting outdoors into nature, or counceling, using essential oils for anger can be very successful!
I really hope you give it a try!

Marjoram is not mentioned but it is my favorite for anger so far. I have seen it calm a grousing and moody person to such a degree I could have sold a box of marjoram that day (spread it on the places this person would sit and rest even the washroom) an almost miraculous change and calm restored. A man who had not spoken to his wife in 2 weeks opened up after sleeping where the linens and bedspace had been anointed with M. and expressed a very deep anger at his loss of a position with his mate (no one’s fault just a life issue) . Another person living in a sexless marriage learned to not be injured by the emotional lack and marjoram made it so much easier for her to deal kindly with herself and her mate. Marjoram works on the gall bladder so the anger component is understood and M. even helps when pains are felt in the liver /gall bladder.

Hi Karen!
I especially love citrus essential oils for all forms of negativity. They are such bright and cheerful oils, I really have a hard time feeling negative while sniffing a good lemon essential oil 🙂 For the workplace, I would suggest putting citrus oils in a diffuser necklace. This way they stay off your skin (citrus oils make your skin very sensitive to sunlight) and it’s great way to use EOs in a discreet and fashionable way. You can find a lot of diffuser necklaces on amazon like these. This is just an example, but I suggest having a look and getting on that is enclosed so that the oils don;t actually touch your skin in any way.
While at work, you can simply go about your day as you normally would and the EOs will diffuse themselves. You can even just take a quick sniff of your necklace when no one is looking! 😉
