As the cooler months come upon us, we might find ourselves opening the windows less and less in order to retain the warmth from our crackling fires or central heating systems. As a result, not only does the air inside our homes become stuffy, our furniture, bedding, rugs, and carpets can suffer from the same malaise.
So, while we wait for spring cleaning season to arrive we can at least keep our homes smelling fresh while also infusing it with a delightful fall-inspired scent: four thieves essential oil.
How to Make Four Thieves Carpet and Mattress Freshener
This recipe is really easy to throw together before puttering around the house on chore day. I often just throw everything into a mixing bowl and toss everything to mix.
Once everything is stirred together, all that’s left to do is funnel the end result into an empty spice jar, salt shaker, or larger container of choice with a shaker-top.
And, although this recipe calls for four thieves essential oil, you can certainly customize the scent to your liking. I just like the pumpkin pie spice-like scent of four thieves this time of year but you can use any combination of EOs you like.
Some great alternatives for fresh smelling essential oils include:
• Grapefruit
• Lavender
• Lemon
• Lemongrass
• Pine
• Rosemary
However, if you want to make a four thieves version, this is what you will need:
• An empty spice jar or salt shaker (anything with a shaker top will do)
• Baking soda
• Diatomaceous Earth (to kill fleas, spiders, silverfish, and any other pests that may be cozying up in your home)
• Four thieves essential oil or the EOs of your choice (kills germs, freshens the air, and deters pests)
Depending on the size of your shaker bottle, you will need different amounts of each ingredient.
I had an empty 4oz spice jar, so I used 8 TB baking soda and 4 2TB Diatomaceous Earth, and 50 drops of thieves essential oil.
You can either use an already made thieves oil or you can learn how to make your own thieves blend here.
Loving Preparation – Four Thieves Carpet and Mattress Freshener
1. Begin by measuring out your dry ingredients either into a mixing bowl. I also like to mix this outside to avoid breathing it in (a fork or whisk works well for this), especially if using DE.
2. Next, add the essential oil by dripping the oil all over the surface of the dry ingredients.
3. Use a whisk to mix thoroughly.
4. Funnel the final mixture into your shaker bottle and cap closed.
To Use
Whenever your mattress, cushions, carpet, rugs, or any other item in your house needs a bit of deodorizing and freshening up, liberally sprinkle over said item in an even layer and let the carpet freshener sit for as long as possible, at least a few hours if you can.
I also recommend using your hand to sort of spread out the dusted powder to really ensure that it covers your mattress completely. This also helps it absorb a bit deeper into the fabric. Don’t worry, it vacuums out very easily!
After the carpet and mattress freshened has done its work for a few hours, vacuum it up and voila! Fresh, bug-free mattresses and carpets!
I find that letting the powder sit on the mattress and other surfaces during the time it takes to wash and dry bedding is a good amount of time to let it “soak” before sucking up the excess with a vacuum and making the bed.
You’ll find that your mattress and carpets not only smell fresh, they will also be lightly infused with the delicious aroma of cinnamon, clove, sweet orange, and rosemary essential oils.

What a great idea to include some d.e.in your carpet deodorizer recipe. Not only will it refresh your carpeting, it’ll also keep the bugs away. I’m going to add some d.e. to my next batch of carpet deodorizer. Usually, I just use baking soda and lavender oil.
