Getting Started with Your Diffuser
Here are some quick tips for effective and safe diffusing:
- Add Essential Oils: Always start by adding the specified drops of essential oils directly into your diffuser.
- Add Water (If Needed): If your diffuser requires water, be sure to add it as directed by the manufacturer. Using filtered or distilled water is generally recommended.
- Optimal Diffusion Time: While practices vary, some sources suggest diffusing for at least 20 minutes, while others recommend 25-30 minutes, or even 15-30 minutes daily. For extended use, diffusing for 15 minutes out of every hour allows your olfactory system to recover. For specific uses like insect repellents, diffuse intermittently for 20-25 minutes, then switch off for 10 minutes.
- Choose the Right Diffuser: A cold-air or ultrasonic cool-air diffuser is often preferred because it atomizes the oils into a fine mist without heating or burning them, which helps preserve their therapeutic benefits. Avoid diffusers that directly heat the oils.
- Ventilation is Key: Always use diffusers in a well-ventilated room, especially if children or pets are present. Start with a shorter diffusion time to gauge reactions before increasing.
- No Diffuser? No Problem! You can still enjoy essential oils by adding a few drops to a bowl of hot (not boiling) water and inhaling the vapors, or by mixing drops with purified water in a spray bottle to mist your surroundings.
