Summer Must-Have Diffuser Recipes:

  1. Spring/Summer Evocation Blend:
    • Ingredients: 5 drops Lemon, 6 drops Geranium, 4 drops Petitgrain, 5 drops May chang essential oils.
    • Benefit: Creates a fresh and evocative fragrance for the summer.
  2. Morning Get Up and Go Diffuser Blend:
    • Ingredients: 4 drops Orange, 3 drops Peppermint, 3 drops Rosemary.
    • Benefit: Turn on immediately upon rising to permeate your room with an energizing aroma. Peppermint, in particular, has been shown to increase mental accuracy. Orange is noted for its uplifting qualities.
  3. Happy and Focused Diffuser Blend:
    • Ingredients: 2 drops Bergamot, 2 drops Frankincense, 2 drops Lime.
    • Benefit: Bergamot, frankincense, and lime can contribute to a happy and focused state. Frankincense can affect mood and has been studied for its antidepressant and anti-anxiety properties.
  4. Cleanse the Air Diffuser Blend:
    • Ingredients: 2 drops Grapefruit, 2 drops Lemon, 1 drop Melaleuca, 1 drop Rosemary.
    • Benefit: Citrus oils like Grapefruit and Lemon are known to ionize negatively when diffused, contributing to an invigorating atmosphere. Cold-pressed Valencia orange oil has shown strong antimicrobial activity against various strains of Staphylococcus aureus, including MRSA. Rosemary also has antimicrobial properties.
  5. Invigorate and Vitalize Diffuser Blend:
    • Ingredients: 3 drops Tangerine, 1 drop Basil, 2 drops Spearmint.
    • Benefit: Tangerine is great for invigorating the senses, and basil contributes to vitality.

Keep the Bugs Away: Insect Repellent Blends

Summer also brings its share of outdoor companions, like mosquitoes and fleas. Essential oils can offer a natural way to deter them. Remember to diffuse these intermittently for 20-25 minutes, then switch off for 10 minutes.

These blends are great to use when dining outdoors. Use a battery-powered diffuser or a heat-based diffuser. Normally, I wouldn't recommend a heat-based diffuser, but for this application, it works well!

Getting Started with Your Diffuser

Here are some quick tips for effective and safe diffusing:

  • Add Essential Oils: Always start by adding the specified drops of essential oils directly into your diffuser.
  • Add Water (If Needed): If your diffuser requires water, be sure to add it as directed by the manufacturer. Using filtered or distilled water is generally recommended.
  • Optimal Diffusion Time: While practices vary, some sources suggest diffusing for at least 20 minutes, while others recommend 25-30 minutes, or even 15-30 minutes daily. For extended use, diffusing for 15 minutes out of every hour allows your olfactory system to recover. For specific uses like insect repellents, diffuse intermittently for 20-25 minutes, then switch off for 10 minutes.
  • Choose the Right Diffuser: A cold-air or ultrasonic cool-air diffuser is often preferred because it atomizes the oils into a fine mist without heating or burning them, which helps preserve their therapeutic benefits. Avoid diffusers that directly heat the oils.
  • Ventilation is Key: Always use diffusers in a well-ventilated room, especially if children or pets are present. Start with a shorter diffusion time to gauge reactions before increasing.
  • No Diffuser? No Problem! You can still enjoy essential oils by adding a few drops to a bowl of hot (not boiling) water and inhaling the vapors, or by mixing drops with purified water in a spray bottle to mist your surroundings.
