A few days ago I had some of the worst allergies I have in a very long time. Red, itchy watery eye, constant sneezing, and a stuffy nose that also dripped like water. I was miserable!
I tried washing the sheets, wiping down surfaces, spraying EO room sprays around the house, and keeping the windows closed. My allergies were still running rampant. I tried using a neti pot and still nothing. It was as if the inside of my nose was so irritated that it was beyond help, no matter what I tried, I couldn’t get the inflammation down, even with tried and true herbal remedies at my disposal. I even resorted to taking Benadryl and still nothing improved.
I was at the point where I just wanted to stuff something up my nose and go to sleep. I couldn’t get anything done.
SOS Allergy Nasal Inhaler Recipe
While I laid miserably in my room, I suddenly remembered seeing a recipe for a nasal inhaler that supposedly worked wonders for allergy symptoms. Luckily, I had everything I needed on hand to quickly throw it together and see what I thought of it.
How to Make an Allergy Nasal Inhaler
This recipe is so easy! Here’s what you’ll need to make it:
• Nasal inhaler (I get a pack of 24 for cheap! So handy!)
• Cedarwood essential oil– known to help relieve allergy symptoms such as runny nose, itchy, red, watery eyes, sinus headache, and congestion.
• Tea tree essential oil– cuts through congestion and reduces irritation in the sinuses.
• Lavender essential oil– calms inflammation and general allergy symptoms.
Loving Preparation – Allergy Nasal Inhaler
To make the inhaler, all you need to do is pop the cotton piece into the nasal tub and add the essential oils one by one. In the video, I used 2 drops of each EO but you can actually up it to 5 drops each if a stronger effect is desired. Since I have sensitive sinuses, I went with a gentler version to start out.
Was it Effective?
This blend feels like it was cutting through stuffiness pretty easily! After using it for a few deep breaths per nostril, I felt like things were starting to open up a bit which was a relief! After about 10-15 minutes, the urge to sneeze began to settle down quite a bit as well.
All in all, it took about 30 minutes or so of switching nostrils with the inhaler to feel well enough to do simple daily tasks. Keep in mind that my allergies that day were TERRIBLE. If you have mild to moderate allergies, I feel like this blend would work really well and fairly quickly for you. Since my symptoms were so severe, it took quite a while for things to calm down.
At the end of the day, I would call this blend a success! Let me know in the comments if you give it a try!

Hi Tash. I love your blog and have found your information accurate and helpful. I have a 17 yr old special needs son who does not know how to blow his nose, sniff or produce an effective cough, therefore he suffers from chronic sinus infections that usually require antibiotics…I hate putting him on antibiotics! Can I use your inhaler recipe as a nasal spray?
Thanks,
Dionne

Hi Dionne!
You can add these oils to a salt inhaler 🙂 This will allow the oils to enter the sinus cavity without spraying them up the nose (which might not feel very comfortable). You can find personal salt nasal inhalers on Amazon. They even make larger versions that you can use for both nasal and oral inhalation.

Hi Tash, I wonder if we need to dilute for children? My daughter has sinus problems, occassionally woke up with runny nose ?
Tash says
Hi Denise!
You can reduce the recipe by half for children 🙂 Also teach her to gently but deeply breathe in. The solution is supposed to be strong, but you can prevent it from feeling too strong by gently breathing in. Hope this helps!
