How to Treat PCOS Naturally Using Essential Oils

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common hormonal condition affecting almost 5-20% of women of childbearing age and 70% of women with infertility. It can affect one or both ovaries, appearing as a collection of cysts (often resembling a string of pearls) on the ovary – making it larger in appearance and causing it to release higher levels of androgens than normal.

As a result, the antral follicles, which are responsible for releasing the ovum, remain immature and do not develop properly. This prevents the ovum from being released and fertilized making it a common symptom for women with polycystic ovaries to have a very irregular ovulation cycle.

One of the main symptoms of PCOS is an exceedingly irregular menstrual cycle. This in itself makes it difficult for a woman with PCOS to gauge when or if she’s ovulating and is one of the leading causes of infertility.

Some women have no symptoms at all, where others may experience acne, emotional imbalance, excessive body hair – including places women normally don’t grow hair, irregular menstrual cycles, mid-cycle bleeding, absent periods, and even miscarriage.

Other symptoms of PCOS include:

• Changes in weight – especially weight gain and trouble losing weight
• Fatigue
• High testosterone levels
• Insulin resistance
• Low sex drive
• Mood swings
• Thinning hair and baldness

Those who suspect they may have PCOS should get a series of hormonal testing done including LH/FSH levels, progesterone, testosterone, and cholesterol and glucose levels.

Insulin resistance is believed to play a major role in the development of PCOS. The key is to balance the excessive androgens in the body in order to allow it to process insulin more efficiently.

Essential oils can certainly help with balancing hormones while changes in your diet take care of the insulin resistance. PCOS is a condition where diet can make ALL the difference, so it’s super important to consider every food and drink before consuming it. You can read a thorough guide on how to eat for PCOS here.

Cypress essential oil, in particular, seems to have chemical compounds most similar to a woman’s ovarian hormones.

Tarragon, sage, clary sage, German chamomile, and fennel are especially good for restoring a regular menstrual cycle as they stimulate the same receptor sites that reproductive hormones do.

Essential Oil Recipes for PCOS

No matter which blend you use, applying it to the appropriate locations is key for best results. Dilute each recipe below in 2TB of carrier oil and then apply a few drops over the abdominal area (especially over the ovaries), the mid and lower back, and on the vita flex points indicated below for female fertility.

Repeat this 2-5 times daily to help shrink ovarian cysts, rebalance hormones, and help prevent future cysts from forming. Following a careful diet is also essential for healing PCOS.

Hi Tash, thank you so much for everything that you do — I am so grateful to have discovered this blog. I just had a quick question about using rosemary essential oil for scalp hair loss — can it stimulate unwanted facial hair growth by any chance? For instance, if I slept with it in my hair? I should say that I was diagnosed with PCOS 10 years ago and had terrible side effects of facial hair growth with Minoxidil. So I don’t want to be repeating that mistake since a preliminary internet search seems to suggest that it is also vasodillatory like Minoxidil. I’d be so grateful for any advice — thanks once again. Lots of love from the UK! xxx

Hi, I’m really wanting to alleviate PVOS symptoms and I’m happy to have found your page. Could I do an essential oil blend of frankincense, lavender, clary sage, geranium and ylang ylang? Or should I just follow your blends above? I don’t have fennel or some of the others you mentioned, yet anyways.

    Hiya!
I was wondering if these oils should be taken less if the user is underage? They are 17, so almost an adult, but should they take less because they are not totally done developing and such? He suffers from PCOS, has Hypothyroid, and also has high cholesterol. There are many blends for these things individually, but it is my assumption that he cannot take all three blends (which have overlapping oils) at the same time. Can he, or would it negatively affect him?

      Hi, Atanya!

The best essential oils for irregular periods are rose otto and tarragon. I think the rose otto is easier to get. You can actually find it pre-diluted on Amazon. I like the brand Plant Therapy 🙂 If you look at the vita flex charts in this blog post, you can see where to apply the oil (just a drop or two) to the inside and outside of the right foot. I would do this 1-2x daily. Alternatively, you can also try seed cycling which you can read more about here.

Should I do any harmone test before asking you proper remedy if then what particular test? Will the EO alone will help or I should combine both seed cycling along with the EO practise?

I conceived my daughter who is two with the help of metformin. I drink mostly water but have a cup of coffee each morning. I walk 30 min a day. I am insulin resistant, and my a1c keeps creeping up. my tsh is normal. my testosterone is normal. my t4 is normal but t3 is borderline low. I’ve recently started

Any help for cystic acne on the back and shoulders with testosterone saliva lab results at 91 when it’s supposed to be the highest at 55. Also high cortisol from ongoing unresolved traumas. Also hypothyroidism but apparently not hashimotos. Great website and so glad the natural methods are being talked about now. I’m a very healthy eater, I don’t eat fast food for like ten years. I eat nothing with hormones, no dairy. I do eat grass fed butter and coconut oil. I work out a lot, and intensely. I’m still having lots of facial and even neck hair or under the face between the neck and face. I was on spiroldactone when I was in high sxhool, but only stayed on for a few months, but all my problems were still there. I tried supplements but tapered from that now. K I’m sure you’ve heard this all before. Thanks for reading.

Depending on how you feel while using the oils (and hopefully while also keeping close track of your hormones!), you should only need to use the blends for a few months. However, this protocol should be used in conjunction with other lifestyle changes that are appropriate for your body in order to get the PCOS to stay “in remission”. Going back to an unhealthy lifestyle can result in the PCOS flaring up again.

      Best of luck! 🙂

Try diluting just 1 drop of thyme essential oil in 1 TB of carrier oil that agrees with your skin. You can dab this on problem areas. Thyme essential oil is just as effective as benzoyl peroxide for treating acne without the side effects!

Hi! First of all, thank you for the wealth of info on this page.

I’m 38 years old, was diagnosed with PCOS at 15. My husband and I have been trying to conceive for the last 2 years with no luck at all. He’s not the problem – in fact he’s “way above average” – but it’s me. We’ve been seeing a fertility specialist for awhile now. Clomid did nothing for me. Was switched to Letrazole (femara), and it’s worked maybe a handful of times, but just barely enough. I have not had a period on my own in years. The only way I can get it now is if I “induce” it with progesterone pills each cycle. IF I DO ovulate that cycle, a normal period follows. But it’s the ovulation that is the issue. Because of my PCOS, these suckers do NOT want to grow to mature enough to ovulate without stimulation, and sometimes even that doesn’t work. Every time I go for my ultrasound, I have multiple follicles, but they are usually too small. Without fail, the one thing my doctor always ends up telling me is that my oestradiol is too LOW. This of course is also another reason my follicles aren’t growing. Apparently my ovaries do not want to produce enough oestrogen on their own, and I’m assuming this is because the high levels of testosterone from my PCOS.

Is there any oil or oil blend that can help this? We are absolutely desperate for a baby. Lifestyle wise, I honestly could not be healthier – husband as well. Both VEGAN, do not drink, do not smoke, supplement with our B12, I walk every single day, drink NOTHING BUT water… I’ve been this way for years. I have no idea what else to do.

      Hi Jessica!

I’m am so sorry to hear about your frustrations! Fertility can be so hard to navigate 🙁 There are a few ways to help boost your oestrogen levels naturally. Have you ever tried seed cycling? As crazy as it sounds, certain seeds can actually encourage your body to produce the needed hormones at the right times. You can read my article on the topic here. Another thing you can do is eat more soy products since these foods mimic estrogen in the body. I’m curious, have you had a full fertility hormone panel done?

As for essential oils, clary sage, ylang ylang, and fennel are some of the most potent oils that promote fertility. These oils work well diluted in 1 tsp of carrier oil (try 2-3 drops of one essential oil at a time) and apply it over the entire abdomen 1-2 times daily the week before and during your period (or when those times are supposed to happen).

You can then use either an essential oil called Progessence Plus by YL or purchase a natural Wild Yam cream. You would then apply this on the soft areas of the body like inner thighs, inner wrists, inner elbows, the sides of the throat (alternate where you apply it) 1-2 times daily for 14 days after your period ends (or when it is supposed to).

From what I have heard, these methods can really help but I encourage you to keep an eye on your hormone levels closely so that you can actually monitor what is working and what isn’t. Hormones are delicate, so just take a care when you start to take matters into your own hands.

I wish you the best of luck!

Went to multiple specialists and was feeling totally done until I reached out to a dr in TX who thinks outside the box in regards to hormones. He found quickly that I have Atypical PCOS. I was put on metformin ER after 3 months on it I was pregnant and had a healthy baby boy (4 yrs old now) and then when he was about 18 months decided to try again with metformin ER and got pregnant immediately with another boy (19 months now)
Contact Dr James Wheeler in Houston TX it will be worth your while. I did 2 phone convos as I’m in CA and that’s it. He recommended bloodwork and just reviewed the results. I have 2 beautiful healthy boys after years of heartache. I bet he can help you too!

If you try the oils, 4 weeks before your surgery may still not be enough time for them to really show you what they can do. it may take a few months to see what changes they can make. It is totally up to you and there is no guarantee that the oils will work well enough to help you conceive. I wish you the best of luck! <3

It’s all about getting those hormones back into balance! Have you had them tested? If you have excess estrogen, try eating one raw carrot per day. You can also try seed cycling which is a non-invasive way to help balnce hormones. You can read more about it here!

Unfortunately, I don’t think there are. Are you talking about spotting? Or your regular bleeding during your period? I know that preventing the body’s natural flow can cause retrograde menstruation. This is where blood does not correctly leave the body and can cause cysts. So be careful!

Have you looked into seed cycling? This is a really non-invasive way to help balance hormones and encourage the right ones to increase or decrease. You can learn how to do it here. As for essential oils, You can increase progesterone by using thyme essential oil (make sure it is well diluted as it is a hot oil. Try a single drop in 1 TB of carrier oil and apply to the inner ankles 1-2x daily). I also encourage you to check out my fertility posts here and here. Rose and sandalwood essential oil are known to balance testosterone levels.

I have mixed up a blend! I was 7 days late and my test were negative! I have two babies and do not want any more. I was told i had pcos 6 years ago. I started the blend by rubbing it on my overies and my foot below my right ankle like the article said. I started my period Sunday! I forgot to put any on Tuesday and my period went away Tuesday. I put some on this morning and my period came back. My question is how many days are we suppose to use it. And Will I bleed every single day I apply the oil? What will these blends do exactly?.. I used number blend number 2!

      Hi Laura!

Have you by chance looked into seed cycling? It’s a great non-invasive way to help get your hormones back into balance 🙂 You can read more about how to do it here. You do this method for at least 3 months to see if it helps kick things back into balance and can continue doing it for as long as you like. Sometimes it takes more than 3-6 months for your body to start doing things on its own. Once you start implementing seed cycling, you can use the corresponding essential oils during the time when your period should be starting and continue to use them for 5 days (or for however many days is normal for your body before you were diagnosed with PCOS). I wouldn’t apply the oils longer than 5 days because what the oils are doing is encouraging the production of FSH which is what happens naturally when your period starts.

    Hello,

Do you think that adding black see oil to any blend could make it more effective?

Also, My husband and I are trying to conceive. I just finished my round of letrozole and should be ovulating in a couple of days. Do you have a blend for promoting ovulation?

I am 37 and diagnosed with PCOS last year. I have been on Metformin and Clomid to regulate my periods. I haven’t been ovulating and am looking for essential oil blends that will help me start ovulating. Do you have any recommendations?

      Hi Deb!

You can actually use the clary sage and ylang ylang together with geranium for a really great fertility blend (2 drops clary sage, and 1 drop each of ylang ylang and geranium in 2 tsp of carrier oil). As for the clary sage, if you’re ttc you can leave it out during the luteal phase.

    Hi Tash.
I have some herbal essential oils and don’t know their uses and how to use them.
I was diagnosed of PCOS and hormonal imbalance. I have a lot of reoccurring acne and black spots. I’ve added weight especially on my stomach and arms. I’ve gotten cellulite on my thighs and uneven complexion. I’ve done a hormonal assay and awaiting the result.
I’ve done a hcg and a hydrotubation because of scaring on the right tube. But still have pains on the right side of my abdomen when it’s pressed. I’ve been placed on clomid and hcg . I’m on the 6th cycle and on clomid. I have a son who’s a teenager and I’m presently TTC.
I have lavender oil, geranium oil, sage oil, oregano oil, jojoba oil, onion oil, fennel oil, fenugreek oil, propolis oil, eucalyptus oil, sweet almond oil, pomegranate oil, grapeseed oil and a combination of rose, frankincense and bergamot oil.
Please what how do I combine them for effective outcome.

      Hi Shumaila!

That really depends on your unique state of health. Have you confirmed that you are ovulating? If not, I recommend picking up some ovulation test strips on Amazon (they’re quite reasonably priced and accurate!) to see if you are ovulating. If you are, then that’s half the battle won right there!

      Hi Taylor!

Have you confirmed that you are ovulating? You can actually get ovulation test strips online for a very decent price on Amazon. I started using them and discovered that my ovulation actually takes place way earlier than what is considered normal. I know that women who have PCOS can actually ovulate without having a period, so it’s good to know if it’s actually happening.

If it is, great! If not, then I suggest using clary sage and geranium essential oil to help encourage ovulation.

Have you considered seed cycling? You can read more about it HERE. This is a very non-invasive method to help regulate your menstrual cycle and even encourage proper periods.

Hi Tash! I hope you can help me. I was diagnosed with PCOS at the tender age of 13. Been on the pill on and off to shrink cysts whenever they appear.

My main symptom was irregular periods, but then I turned 24 and I started losing a lot hair! Turns out I had very big cysts in both ovaries! I had to be put on Diane 35 and Metformin for a while, because the BCP was no longer working as well shrinking the cysts as before.

I just quit BCP (dealing with candida overgrowth right now) 4 months ago. I started seed cycling last month, I got a period when I was supposed to, but this month not yet :/ I made the huge mistake of trying to get on the pill again, but stopped after 3 days.

Which blend would you recommend for my specific case?

      Hi Karen!

Sorry to hear about your struggles! You may want to look into frankincense, myrrh, ginger, rose otto, and tarragon. Granted, these oils together won’t smell particularly great, but I think they are the most suited for your needs. You can refer to the article for specifics. At any rate, I would make a simple roll-on blend by adding 1 drops of each oil or making your own blend by adding 6 drops total of any of the essential oils I mentioned. 🙂 Keep up with the seed cycling!

      Hi Julia!

I recommend choosing which oils will suit you best. Tarragon, fennel, myrrh, frank, and ginger are great for painful periods and hormonal balance (you could try adding 1 drop of each to a roll-on bottle to see how that feels). For blemishes, I would use a simple spot treatment of tea tree oil (2 drops in a 10ml roll-on bottle with jojoba oil or other tolerated carrier oil) and apply that to trouble areas. As for the blends, you could try Blend #2 🙂

I’m just starting my journey with EO’s, so I know this is probably a crazy question, but when I combine these “cocktails,” where do I store them? I presume it’s a bit much for a diffuser or inhaler — do you need to actually buy glass bottles and bottle them yourself? Thanks in advance!

I would recommend picking up a pack of 5ml essential oils bottles to make your “cocktails” in 🙂 Be sure to label them and list the oils used and how much of each because I promise you, you will NOT remember what they are. You can then store these in a cool dark place out of direct sunlight.

You can give other chemotypes a go since the thujanol version is hard to find but I’m not certain they will work the same way. The chemical makeup of specific essential oil are what make them so effective 🙂

          Hi Connie!

Hmmmm, I’m wondering what her hormone profile looks like. to be menstruating twice a month CAN be a sign of estrogen deficiency. I’m wondering if getting her serum levels tested would be a good idea to get a clearer picture of what’s going on.

As for the EOs, I would go with blend #1 or #3. You could even add a drop or two of tarragon essential oil if you have it on hand.

          Best of luck!

          Hi Nikki!

You can definitely use these in a roll-on bottle. I suggest adding the full recipe (without the carrier oil) to its own essential oil dropper bottle if you want better control over how many roll-ons you want to make. You can then add just 6 drops of the essential oil mixture per 10ml roll-on bottle. Otherwise, make the full recipe including the carrier oil to make about 3 roll-on bottles (or even one large one if you find a roll-on bottle big enough). Keep in mind that these are higher dilutions, so reduce the essential oils as feels most comfortable. 🙂
